The J.D. Barnes Limited group of companies combine technology with diverse experience to create solutions that are both cost-effective and technically sound. Established in 1960, J.D. Barnes Limited has since become a leader in Canada's surveying, mapping and land information services industry. Founded by John "Jack" Duncan Barnes, an industrious and entrepreneurial surveyor, and with the support and guidance of future company presidents John Barber and Gary Kirstine the company began by specializing in legal and engineering surveys mainly working with utility companies, land developers, government organizations and private individuals. We expanded our services in 1972 with the establishment of a photogrammetric mapping operation and again in 1974 with the acquisition of ProConsul Limited, a computer application service company. This expansion of professional services continues to be a key philosophy embraced by the firm.
It is our people who make the difference through their varied disciplines, their initiatives and above all their enthusiasm. We employ a highly experienced team of professional surveyors, engineers, technologists and technicians, systems analysts, programmers and support staff.
We also believe that our success is dependent upon investing in the next generation of professionals by supporting their education and development through financial support, mentorship programmes and direct contributions to academic institutions.
Providing quality services to a diversified client group, J.D. Barnes Limited has grown to be the largest firm of its kind. We employ world-class technology to deliver timely and stellar service, every time. As an employee owned company with 17 regional offices located in Ontario and Quebec, 550 full time and contractor staff, and a 60-year history, the firm has developed an organizational culture that encourages and rewards innovation, diligence, teamwork and client satisfaction.
We believe in continuous training and development of our staff. This is accomplished by constant reinvestment in their growth with in-house, and/or external technical, business and professional courses. We employ over 80 licensed Ontario, Quebec and Canada Land Surveyors and professional engineers, significantly more than any other firm in the province.
We continue Jack Barnes’ philosophy by constant investment in leading edge technology providing all disciplines within our firm with the tools necessary to remain at the forefront of the industry. Traditional field survey equipment is complemented by the latest technology available such as Lidar Scanners, Global Positioning Systems, Robotic Total Stations, Digital Precise Levels, Integrated Bathymetric Systems and wireless data collection devices. Our aerial mapping group has invested in a fleet of eight aircraft to expedite photo acquisition which is processed by state of the art software. Our in-house Information Technology group supports the hardware and software needs of the various divisions and has been instrumental in developing unique and innovative programs to expedite field to office data exchange and processing. As with all of our services, the skills and knowledge of our staff are the most important factor in the success of the firm.
